Antigen-antibody tests rely on the fact that there is a specific antibody for each antigen, and so each one can be used to detect the presence of the other. These tests are usually performed on serum, but occasionally samples of other body fluids, tissue, or stool may be used. Different models of antigen-antibody tests are available for the isolation and differentiation of various strains of infectious diseases. However, in a reversed agglutination assay the antibody, which is attached to particles, reacts with the soluble antigen. The particles (in this case, latex) do not themselves play a part in the reaction and they are therefore passive.
