Immunosuppressant. Isolated from Penicillium brevicompactum.
Mycophenolate mofetil (cellcept) is an immunosuppressant prodrug of mycophenolic acid, a fermentation product of Penicillium brevicompactum. Immunosuppression occurs via inhibition of type II inosine-5’-monophosphate dehydrogenase, depleting guanosine preferentially in T and B lymphocytes. Mycophenolic acid displays anti-inflammatory activity by preventing NO production specifically from iNOS and by blocking glycosylation and expression of adhesion molecules and therefore recruitment of lymphocytes and monocytes to sites of inflammation.
Soluble in DMSO (25 mg/ml) or 100% ethanol (25 mg/ml, warm).
