TAAR proteins are potential targets for drugs of abuse, such as amphetamine and MDMA, as well as neuropsychiatric disorders including schizophrenia, depression, and attention deficit disorder. TAAR-1 is a 340 amino acid protein that increases intracellular cAMP accumulation in response to beta-phenylethylamine and tyramine. TAAR-1 is associated with the detection of social cues, illustrating its significance as a therapeutic target.
